Professor Kerstin Persson Waye leads the multidisciplinary Sound Environment and Health research group at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy, Department of Community Medicine and Public Health. Her work bridges environmental science, public health, and occupational medicine with a focus on noise and vibration impacts.
Her research spans sound environment physiology, child environmental health, and occupational noise exposure in female-dominated workplaces. Current projects include a longitudinal EU study on children's mental health (0-21 years), railway vibration effects, preschool acoustic interventions, and wind turbine noise impacts. She directs a unique sound environment laboratory for sleep physiology studies and contributed to Swedish national guidelines on low-frequency noise.
Her 15 most recent publications (2022-2025) reveal three dominant trends: (1) 40% focus on childhood noise exposure (preschool acoustics, mental health, hearing development), (2) 35% examine railway/traffic vibration impacts (residential exposure, diabetes, atherosclerosis), and (3) 25% analyze workplace interventions (preschools, obstetrics). Methodologically, 60% employ epidemiological approaches while 40% use laboratory field studies.
Professor Persson Waye serves as Chair of Non-Auditory Health Effects at the International Commission on Biological Effects of Noise (ICBEN), previously contributed to WHO noise guidelines (2018), and collaborates with Karolinska Institutet and Örebro University. Her policy impact includes revised Swedish Work Environment Authority standards for low-frequency noise.
She teaches across medical, public health, environmental science, and audiology programs while maintaining active supervision of research staff. Her international advisory roles include the Council of Canadian Academies (2015) and WHO guideline development groups.
