Kerstin Nilsson is a Professor of Surgery with specialization in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Örebro University. She holds dual roles as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health and Chair of the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment (SBU). Her research focuses on pelvic floor dysfunction, metabolic aspects of pregnancy, and surgical outcomes in gynaecological procedures. She earned her PhD from Uppsala University (1994) and became a professor at Örebro University in 2015.
Her key research areas include mechanisms of pelvic floor injuries during childbirth, interventions to reduce maternal obesity, and inflammatory responses in surgical procedures. Collaborations span obstetrics, paediatrics, and biomedical sciences. She has pioneered structured recovery protocols in gynaecological surgery and contributed to antenatal lifestyle intervention studies. She is actively involved in medical education, leading the development of Örebro University’s new medical program emphasizing student-centered learning.
Notable projects include studies on placental gene expression in obese women, robotic vs. abdominal hysterectomy outcomes, and long-term effects of maternal weight management. Her work addresses both clinical and population health challenges, with a focus on improving maternal and child health outcomes.
