Kerry Pettigrew is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at Teesside University, affiliated with the SHLS Life Sciences School. She holds a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology from Queen's University Belfast (2007) and a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from Ulster University (2003), where she received the Institute of Biomedical Sciences President’s Prize. Her research focuses on three key areas: genetic epidemiology, microbial whole genome sequencing, and secondary data analysis to address population-level health and climate challenges. She leads modules such as Genomics and Bioinformatics (SCI4007-N) and Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics (SCI2008-N). Currently, she is Principal Investigator on a Commonwealth Climate Resilience Challenge Grant (2023–2025) investigating saline intrusion impacts in coastal South Asia.
Research Interests: Analysis of genetic variants using genomic tools, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, health inequalities linked to climate change, and just transition strategies. Teaching includes supervision of MSc and BSc research projects in biomedical science and bioinformatics.
- Education:
- BSc Hons Biomedical Sciences with Diploma in Industrial Studies (Ulster University, 2003)
- PhD in Genetic Epidemiology of Diabetic Nephropathy (Queen's University Belfast, 2007)
- Key Projects:
- Commonwealth Climate Resilience Challenge Grant: Transdisciplinary research network on saline intrusion and health in South Asia
- Awards:
- Institute of Biomedical Sciences President’s Prize (2003)
Recent articles highlight her work in genomic epidemiology (e.g., PopPIPE framework), just transition policy analysis (Asia-Pacific strategies), and antimicrobial resistance studies in vancomycin-resistant pathogens. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges biomedical research with global health and environmental sustainability challenges.
