Kerry L. Haynie is Professor of Political Science and African & African American Studies at Duke University, where he has held appointments since 2003. He currently serves as Dean of the Social Sciences and previously chaired Duke’s Academic Council (2019-21) and the Department of Political Science (2021-22). His work examines intersections of race, gender, and political institutions.

Research Focus: Haynie’s scholarship explores how American political structures affect African Americans’ and women’s political influence, legislative representation, and racialized incarceration. His publications include award-winning books and analyses of minority voting patterns.

- Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring (2015)
- Samuel DuBois Cook Award (2014) for contributions to racial equity
- Multiple university-level diversity and mentoring awards
Grants & Leadership: He secured over $1.3 million in grants, including from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to support faculty development programs. He founded the Summer Institute on Tenure and Professional Advancement for underrepresented faculty and co-leads initiatives on race and the American South.
