Kerry L. Shaw is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Their research focuses on behavioral genetics, sexual selection, speciation, and the genetic architecture of behavior, particularly in orthopteroid insects like Hawaiian swordtail crickets.
Dr. Shaw’s work investigates mechanisms driving rapid speciation, including the genomic basis of behavioral evolution, sexual isolation, and ecological interactions. The Shaw Lab explores these questions using field and lab studies, genomics, and phylogenetic methods, with a primary focus on Hawaiian Laupala cricket species.
Recent publications highlight studies on gene flow barriers, biogeographic patterns, and the role of sexual isolation in speciation. Their research bridges evolutionary genetics, ecology, and behavior, contributing to understanding how new species arise and diversify.
Dr. Shaw teaches courses on speciation (BIONB 4530), animal behavior (BIONB 4200), and introductory neurobiology (BIONB 2210). The Shaw Lab actively engages in community-level studies of speciation and genomic analyses of speciation phenotypes.
