Kerry Green is a Professor of Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, also serving as Department Chair and Director of the Behavioral and Community Health Undergraduate Honors Program. She holds ADVANCE Professor roles in the School of Public Health and the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (INFO). Her work focuses on health equity, urban communities, mental health, prevention science, and aging, particularly among disadvantaged populations. Dr. Green leads the Woodlawn Study, a longitudinal cohort study since 1965, funded by NIH institutes including NIDA, NIA, and NICHD.
Education: PhD in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University (2004), MA in Human Development from University of Maryland (1998), BS in Psychology from College of William and Mary (1995).
Research interests center on structural factors influencing health disparities, life course trajectories of substance use, violence, and mental health. Her work emphasizes applying methodological innovations like propensity score matching to public health questions. Dr. Green has secured over $10M in NIH funding and published extensively in journals such as Prevention Science, Journal of Adolescent Research, and Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
Awards include the 2024 Leda Amick Wilson Mentoring Award, 2020 UMD SPH Research Award, and NIH Loan Repayment Program (2007-2012). Her mentoring extends to graduate students in public health and sociology, with a focus on advancing underrepresented scholars. Current projects include examining structural racism's impact on health behaviors and developing digital mental health interventions for marginalized groups.
Dr. Green directs the Woodlawn Study's midlife and aging phases, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on federal grants. She chairs the School of Public Health's Community Engagement Committee and teaches advanced research methods. Her work bridges academia and community, aiming to translate findings into policy and prevention strategies for vulnerable populations.
