Kenton R. Kaufman, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic, holding the W. Hall Wendel Jr. Musculoskeletal Research Professorship. He leads the Motion Analysis Laboratory, focusing on human locomotion, prosthetics, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. His academic appointments span the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Physiology & Biomedical Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Biomechanical Engineering from North Dakota State University and completed postdoctoral training at Mayo Clinic.
Research interests include advanced prosthetics, gait analysis, neuromuscular disorders, and clinical biomechanics. He has led projects funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and NIH, including work on robotic ankle prosthetics and training methods for wounded warriors. Over 372 publications reflect expertise in biomechanics, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and clinical engineering.
Honors include the Borelli Award (2013), John Insall Award (2012), and Distinguished Engineer recognition (2008). His clinical practice integrates 3D motion analysis, electromyography, and plantar-pressure measurement. He directs research in Mayo's Department of Orthopedic Surgery and collaborates internationally on musculoskeletal and rehabilitation sciences.
