Dr. Kenneth W Williford is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), where he has served since 2009, including as Department Chair from 2009-2023. He holds a BA from UTA (1995) and PhD from the University of Iowa (2003), with postdoctoral work in Cognitive Science at École Polytechnique (2005) and Neuroscience at Iowa (2008-2009). His academic journey includes positions at St. Cloud State University and Universität Bielefeld.
- Education: PhD (Philosophy, University of Iowa, 2003); MA (Philosophy, University of Iowa, 2000); BA (Philosophy, UTA, 1995)
Williford's research centers on Philosophy of Mind and Phenomenology, with groundbreaking work on the Projective Consciousness Model (PCM) developed with David Rudrauf. His scholarship bridges Husserlian phenomenology, projective geometry, and neuroscience to explain subjective experience, self-consciousness, and intersubjectivity. Key contributions include resolving regress arguments about self-acquaintance and modeling consciousness through mathematical frameworks.
His publication trends reveal an evolution from historical analyses (Hume, Spinoza, Sartre) toward interdisciplinary consciousness science, culminating in PCM's geometric approach to pre-reflective self-awareness. Recent work integrates animal pain neuroscience, theodicy, and projective geometry to address philosophical and ethical problems.
- Awards: Faculty Development Leave (2024), Graduate Neuroscience Scholarship (2008), CREA Postdoctoral Fellowship (2005), Distinguished Dissertation Award (2003)
As an advisor, Williford has mentored graduate students across Philosophy, Psychology, and Art History. His service includes chairing UTA's Department of Philosophy & Humanities (2009-2023), serving on university committees, and reviewing for top journals including Mind and Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences. He co-directs the Projective Consciousness research program with international collaborators in France and Germany.
