Dr. Kenneth W. Berendzen is a Senior Researcher and Staff Scientist at the Center for Plant Molecular Biology (ZMBP) at the University of Tübingen, Germany. He serves as the Shared Resource Lab Manager for both the FACS and Transformation Departments at ZMBP, where he oversees critical core facilities supporting plant molecular biology research. His position within the Faculty of Science places him at the intersection of advanced technological support and cutting-edge plant research.
Dr. Berendzen's research program focuses on protein-protein and protein-DNA network interactions of transcription factors in plants. His work employs diverse methodologies including Genetics, FACS and Flow Cytometry, Reporter-gene assays, Cloning, Tissue-culture, protoplast generation and transfection, Protein-protein interaction assays, and Bio-Informatics. He primarily works with Arabidopsis thaliana plants and cell-cultures, as well as Nicotiana benthamiana. A significant portion of his research involves the two-component system (TCS) in plants, also known as the Multi-Step Phosphorelay, which is an evolutionarily conserved signaling mechanism from bacteria to plants.
His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to plant molecular biology, with recent work focusing on transcription factor networks, chromatin organization, plant hormone signaling, and advanced methodologies for studying protein interactions. The 15 most recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on plant signaling mechanisms, nuclear organization, and innovative technical approaches that bridge computational and experimental biology.
Dr. Berendzen teaches within both the Plant Physiology Department and the Nano Science Department, offering lectures and practical courses at the Bachelor and Master levels. He welcomes students interested in lab rotations or practical courses to visit his office on the 5th floor, West Wing, room 5X17 at ZMBP.
He is the principal creator and developer of Motif Mapper, a collection of scripts for various word counting tasks in DNA sequence analysis. This open-source software package has been widely used in bioinformatics research and has evolved through multiple versions including VBA, .NET, and Python implementations. His technical expertise extends to developing specialized methodologies such as animation of the two-component system using Blender and various bioinformatics tools for protein-protein interaction mining.
