Kenneth (Ken) Segall is an Associate Professor of Physics at Colgate University's Department of Physics and Astronomy, where he has been employed since August 2003. He holds a PhD in Applied Physics from Yale University (1999) and a BA in Physics with minors in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Philosophy from Fairfield University (1989). His research focuses on understanding emergent phenomena in nonlinear systems, particularly through networks of superconducting Josephson junctions.
- Education: BA in Physics (Fairfield University, 1989); PhD in Applied Physics (Yale University, 1999)
- Postdoctoral Experience: Yale University (2000-2000), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2000-2003)
Segall's research explores how fundamental physical laws lead to complex behaviors, such as tornado formation or neural network dynamics. He investigates fluxons, discrete breathers, and synchronization in disordered oscillators, with applications to modeling neuronal voltage behavior.
He received the Harding-Bliss Prize in Engineering at Yale for his doctoral work. Segall emphasizes undergraduate research involvement, aligning with Colgate University's academic traditions.
