Kenneth Pak Kin Lee, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell and Biological Systems at Penn State College of Medicine. His research focuses on understanding how matter and information cross cell membranes through the study of membrane proteins.
Dr. Lee's research interests include membrane protein structure and function, particularly ion channels, transporters, and receptors. His lab combines electron cryomicroscopy with X-ray crystallographic, biophysical, biochemical, chemical-biological, electrophysiological, and cell-biological approaches to investigate these molecular mechanisms. Key research areas include polyamine transporters, Orai channels, and IRE1 endoribonuclease.
His recent publications demonstrate expertise in structural biology of membrane proteins, with significant work on ATP13A2, Orai channel gating, and IRE1 modulation. These studies contribute to understanding fundamental cellular processes and potential therapeutic strategies for related diseases.
Dr. Lee currently leads a research project titled 'Structure and function of polyamine transporters' funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (2022-2023). His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being through molecular insights that could lead to new therapeutic approaches.
