He serves as Medical Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories at Ben Taub Hospital and Section Chief of Clinical Microbiology, Diagnostic Immunology, and Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Additionally, he holds an Associate Professor position at the School of Health Professions, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Muldrew completed his MD at the University of Texas Medical Branch (1999), MPH at the University of Texas Houston School of Public Health (1995), and a BS in Disease Control with Biology/Chemistry Certifications from the University of North Texas (1993). His certifications include Molecular Genetic Pathology and Medical Microbiology from the American Board of Pathology. He is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and a member of the Association for Molecular Pathology and American Society for Microbiology.
His research interests span molecular diagnostics, clinical microbiology, and infectious diseases, with a focus on HIV/AIDS, Clostridium difficile infections, placental pathogen detection, and fecal microbiota transplantation. He has contributed to advancements in RNA sequencing, viral load quantification (e.g., BK Polyomavirus), and pharmacogenomic applications in drug metabolism.
Dr. Muldrew’s work emphasizes translational research, bridging molecular techniques with clinical practice to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. His laboratories are pivotal in addressing urgent diagnostic challenges in infectious diseases and oncology.
