Ken Shotts is the David S. and Ann M. Barlow Professor of Political Economy at Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB). He holds a BA in Political Science (Stanford, 1993) and a PhD in Political Economy (Stanford GSB, 1999). His research focuses on political economy, electoral accountability, and policy entrepreneurship, using game theory to analyze how institutions shape government policy. He has taught at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan, and held visiting roles at the Hoover Institution and Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.
Shotts’ administrative roles include Director of the Sea Executive Program and Faculty Director of the Business, Government and Society Initiative. His awards include the Coulter Family Faculty Fellowship and the Stanford GSB Trust Faculty Fellowship. He co-authored Leading with Values (2022), emphasizing ethical leadership strategies.
His teaching spans courses on ethics, values-driven leadership, and political institutions in Executive Education programs. Notable articles include work on veto players, media accountability in democracies, and policy entrepreneurship. Shotts emphasizes structuring institutions to foster ethical decision-making and societal impact.
