Ken Menkhaus is a Professor of Political Science at Davidson College, where he has taught since 1991. His expertise spans international and comparative politics, regional specialization in the Horn of Africa, and applied work in conflict analysis, state-building, and humanitarianism.
- Education: Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of South Carolina; B.A. from Xavier University.
His research focuses on state failure, political Islam, development, peace operations, and refugee crises in the Horn of Africa. His work bridges academic and policy-oriented applications, with a strong emphasis on field-based conflict assessments and humanitarian access.
Scientific Awards:
- Fulbright Scholarship (1987) for dissertation research on Somalia.
Applied Work: Menkhaus has served as a consultant to the United Nations, World Bank, U.S. Government, and NGOs. He held advisory roles in the U.N. Operation in Somalia (1993–1994), the U.S. Army Peacekeeping Institute (1994–1995), and the U.S. Army Strategic Studies Institute (2011–2012). He is a Senior Fellow at the Rift Valley Institute and Senior Research Advisor for the Enough Project.
Publications & Media: With over 100 publications, his recent work includes analyses of Somalia, Northern Kenya, and the interplay between stabilization and humanitarian access. He has provided expert testimony to U.S. Congressional subcommittees and appeared on major international media outlets.
