Ken Howell is an Associate Professor in the Division of Communication & Creative Media at Champlain College, teaching across programs like Game Design, Graphic Design, and User Experience. He joined Champlain as an adjunct in 2006, previously teaching at NYU Steinhardt and New Jersey City University. His expertise spans interaction design, including user interface design and custom game controllers, alongside a practice as a visual artist exploring laser-cut block printing.
- Education: Master of Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts, New York; Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art.
- Research & Projects: Collaborated with Champlain’s Emergent Media Center (EMC) on initiatives like the UNFPA Game to Prevent Violence Against Women and IBM Virtual Worlds. Advised the Sandbox team, whose work exhibited at the Chicago Design Museum and Game Developers Conference. Active in the Illumination Collective, exploring digitally controlled lighting as art.
- Professional Experience: 20+ years as an independent Interaction Designer for brands like Urban Outfitters, Rossignol, Pantene, and Skittles. Founding board member of Generator Makerspace, engaging in the Maker Movement.
