Dr. Ken Dueker is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming, where he conducts research in seismology and geophysics with a focus on mantle structure and dynamics. His work centers on seismic imaging of mantle plumes, particularly the Yellowstone hotspot, as well as studies of the Rocky Mountains and Western United States crust and mantle structure.
Dr. Dueker's research interests include mantle plume dynamics, crustal and lithospheric structure, seismic imaging techniques, and the tectonic evolution of western North America. His work combines field seismology with advanced data processing methods to understand the deep Earth structure beneath geologically significant regions. He has led or participated in major seismic experiments including the Yellowstone Seismic Array, Colorado Rockies Seismic Transects (CREST), and studies of the British Columbia Batholith.
His recent publications demonstrate expertise in mantle discontinuities (particularly the 410 km boundary), low-velocity layers, seismic tomography, and receiver function analysis. His work spans from theoretical method development to specific regional studies of tectonically active areas. The research shows consistent focus on using seismic data to understand the thermal and compositional structure of the Earth's interior.
Dr. Dueker has advised numerous graduate students who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry, including Josh Stachnik, Huaiyu Yuan, John Jabinsek, Brian Zurek, and David Fee. His teaching responsibilities include graduate courses in Global Seismology and Inverse Theory, as well as undergraduate courses in Introduction to Geophysics and Earth Science.
