Professor Ken Brown serves as Professor in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at University College Cork (UCC), Deputy Director of Insight@UCC, and co-leader of the decision-making research challenge. He is a Funded Investigator on CONFIRM (national smart manufacturing centre) and PI/executive committee member of Enable (smart cities/IoT inter-centre spoke), focusing on smart urban mobility.
His research spans artificial intelligence, optimization, and constraint-based reasoning with applied focus on smart cities, IoT infrastructure, urban mobility systems, and healthcare decision support. Key application domains include telecommunications network optimization, geriatric prescribing systems, and industrial smart manufacturing solutions developed through industry partnerships.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Best Paper Prizes at ECAI, IEEE SECON, and IEEE Globecom conferences
- Irish Life Sciences Commercialisation Award (2011) for geriatric prescribing decision support
Industrial collaborations span multinationals (Intel, Alcatel Lucent) and SMEs, with research leadership in CTVR (Irish telecommunications centre) and commercialization resulting in Clinical Support Information Systems startup. He leads the Optimisation & Decision Analytics research group within Insight@UCC's national research infrastructure.
