Ken Bevis is a Professor of Geology at Hanover College with over 30 years of experience teaching and conducting geological field research since the early 1990s. He teaches core courses including Physical Geology, Sedimentary Deposits, Geomorphology, and Advanced GIS, while maintaining active field research programs engaging undergraduate students.
His educational credentials include:
- B.S. from Grand Valley State University
- M.S. from Humboldt State University
- Ph.D. from Oregon State University
Dr. Bevis's research centers on geomorphology, glacial geology, and GIS applications, with specific focus on reconstructing alpine glacial histories in the western U.S. and terrain mapping. He integrates student research through field expeditions and his collaborative project In the Playground of Giants, which transforms geological education for diverse audiences through digital storytelling and field observations.
His publication record reveals a strong trend toward applied geological education and LiDAR-based terrain analysis, spanning glacial reconstructions in Oregon, sinkhole mapping in Indiana, and hazard assessment in Southwestern canyons. This work bridges academic research with public outreach through innovative digital platforms.
Recognition includes:
- Stanley Totten Award (2010)
Dr. Bevis mentors students through the Summer Research Fellows Program, directing collaborative projects that develop field skills, scientific writing, and presentation abilities. His funding initiatives support student participation in Grand Canyon field courses and Oregon glacial studies, creating pathways for early-career geologists.
The "In the Playground of Giants" initiative serves as his primary research ecosystem, combining student fieldwork, public education, and digital content creation to document geological phenomena across North America through an accessible, narrative-driven framework.
