Ken A. Dill is a SUNY Distinguished Professor at Stony Brook University, holding appointments in Physics, Chemistry, and Applied Mathematics. He serves as the Louis and Beatrice Laufer Endowed Chair of Physical and Quantitative Biology and is the Founding Director of the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, with prior leadership as president of the Biophysical Society.
His research focuses on fundamental biophysical principles, including:
- Protein folding mechanisms and energy landscapes
- Statistical thermodynamics of water and aqueous solutions
- Nonequilibrium dynamics in biological systems
- Cellular adaptation and evolutionary biophysics
His publications demonstrate strong interdisciplinary integration across physics, chemistry, and biology, with recent advances in computational methods (MELD x MD), water modeling, and nonequilibrium systems. Awards include the Hans Neurath Award, Emily Gray Award, Max Delbruck Prize, and Sackler International Prize. He has authored influential textbooks: Molecular Driving Forces and Protein Actions: Principles and Modeling.
At the Laufer Center, he leads collaborative research on the physical principles of biological systems, with ongoing projects on proteome biophysics, maximum caliber variational principles, and origins of life mechanisms.
