Kemel Arafet Cruz is a Researcher at the Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM), Universitat Jaume I, Spain. He earned his BSc in Chemistry from Universidad de Oriente (Cuba) in 2003 and a European PhD in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling from Universitat Jaume I in 2017. His research is funded through postdoctoral contracts from Universitat Jaume I (2019) and Generalitat Valenciana (2020).
Research Focus: Cruz specializes in computational enzymology, employing QM/MM simulations to study cysteine protease catalytic mechanisms, inhibition strategies, and enzyme design. His work spans drug discovery (targeting proteases in diseases like COVID-19 and trypanosomiasis), biodegradation pathways (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate), and enzyme kinetics.
Publication Trends: His recent articles (2021-2023) emphasize covalent inhibition mechanisms, SARS-CoV-2 protease targeting, and environmental enzymology, consistently utilizing QM/MM methodologies to explore reaction dynamics and inhibitor design.
Affiliation: He is part of the BioComp research group led by Prof. Vicent Moliner, which develops computational tools for biological catalysis and biomaterial design.
