Kelly Scarff is a Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, where she also serves as Director of the Technical Communication Program. She holds a PhD in Rhetoric and Writing (Virginia Tech, 2021), an MFA in Creative Writing (Chatham University, 2010), a BA in English (University of Pittsburgh, 2008), and an AA in Graphic Design (Westmoreland County Community College, 1999). Her research focuses on rhetoric and writing studies, professional and technical communication, environmental communication, and public discourse.
Scarff’s work bridges engineering education and communication practices, emphasizing technical writing in STEM fields. Her recent studies investigate embedded communication skills in engineering curricula and environmental justice in public participation processes. She leads initiatives to enhance technical communication programs and improve accessibility of engineering documentation.
Her publications analyze public hearings, metaphor use in environmental debates, and curriculum design for technical writing. She contributes to the John Jones Faculty Fellowships and chairs initiatives within her department. Scarff’s teaching and research reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and clear, impactful communication in technical contexts.
