Professor Kelly Newell is a leading academic in molecular psychiatry and neuro-psychopharmacology at the University of Wollongong’s School of Medical, Indigenous and Health Sciences. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience (2007) and has been affiliated with UoW since 2002. Her research focuses on the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia and depression, with an emphasis on glutamatergic signaling and neurodevelopmental mechanisms.

- Prior Roles: Associate Professor (2018–2021), Senior Lecturer (2012–2017), Lecturer (2007–2011)
Her research interests include:
- Glutamate neurotransmission dysregulation in psychiatric disorders
- Preclinical studies of antidepressant and antipsychotic drug effects
- Neurodevelopmental impacts of maternal drug exposure
- Collaborative work with the Stanley Medical Research Institute and NeuRA
Professor Newell has secured significant funding, including an NSW Health grant (2022–2026) for schizophrenia research and a UOW grant (2021) on depression treatments. She leads a research group and has supervised 15+ higher-degree students, focusing on topics like schizophrenia neurobiology, maternal mental health interventions, and habenula dysfunction in depression.
Her service roles include Chair of the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health Workload Reference Group and Discipline Lead for Medical Sciences (2022–present).
