Kelley Stewart

Kelley Stewart is a Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Science at the University of Nevada, Reno, affiliated with the College of Agriculture. She directs the Wildlife Ecology & Conservation Lab located in Max Fleischmann Agriculture Building. Her research focuses on population ecology of large mammals, examining density-dependent effects on population growth, movement patterns, habitat selection, and inter/intraspecific competition. She also investigates community-level ecological impacts such as changes in plant communities and trophic cascades.

Education includes a BS from University of California Davis (1993), MS from Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1997), and PhD from University of Alaska Fairbanks (2004).

Research explores wildlife responses to environmental changes including mining impacts, migration patterns, and anthropogenic disturbances. Her work integrates field ecology with landscape modeling to address conservation challenges in arid ecosystems.

Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on ungulate ecology, with recurring themes in habitat selection, reproductive trade-offs, and predator-prey dynamics. Technological innovations in ruggedness indices and movement analysis appear throughout her scholarship.

Laboratory activities include training graduate students in ecological field methods and geospatial analysis through the Wildlife Ecology & Conservation Lab. Collaborative projects span multiple institutions including state wildlife agencies and federal land management partners.
