Keith Head is HSBC Professor of Asian Commerce in the Strategy and Business Economics Division at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia. He received his B.A. in Economics from Swarthmore College in 1986 and his Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 1991 under Paul Krugman's supervision. He is a leading expert in international trade economics, particularly known for his work on gravity models and multinational corporations.
Dr. Head teaches courses on international business management and government policy toward business. His research focuses on international trade patterns, the decisions of multinational corporations, and economic geography. He has developed influential methodologies for estimating gravity equations and has applied these to evaluate regional trade agreements, including the European Union's integration process. His recent work includes analyzing the diffusion of knowledge via professional networks and automotive industry responses to trade policy changes.
His research follows several key trends: evaluating economic integration through gravity models, examining multinational corporate strategies, and analyzing trade policy impacts. His work on 'The United States of Europe' demonstrates how European states have matched or surpassed levels of economic integration found among US states in several important metrics. His gravity model research has become foundational in international trade analysis.
