Dr. Keith Bowers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Memphis, where he leads the Bowers Lab. His research focuses on evolutionary, physiological, and behavioral ecology of wild birds, with specific interests in intrafamilial conflict (sexual conflict, parent-offspring conflict, sibling rivalry), life history evolution, ecophysiology, and climate change impacts on avian populations.
Education:
- B.A. in Biology from Central College (Iowa)
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Illinois State University
- Postdoctoral work at Illinois State University
His work combines observational and experimental approaches to study individual variation in mating success, reproductive investment, and responses to environmental stressors. Current projects include establishing study populations at the Meeman Biological Station to investigate climate change effects on breeding ecology and brood parasitism.
His publications span topics in parental care, sex allocation, incubation physiology, and climate change impacts, with recent work analyzing global meta-data and long-term field studies on songbirds. His lab has received travel awards from the American Ornithological Society and University of Memphis.
Scientific Awards:
- Mark E. Hauber Award for best oral presentation on avian behavior (2024)
- Van Vleet Memorial Doctoral Award (2024) for Mary Giannini
- Travel awards from University of Memphis and American Ornithological Society
Dr. Bowers has mentored numerous students, including recent graduates Shelby Green (MS 2024), Kelly O’Neil (PhD 2024), and active candidates like Rin Pell (PhD) and Mary Giannini (PhD). The Bowers Lab involves multidisciplinary field crews annually, with members such as Dr. Kelly Miller, Ashley Atkins Coleman, and Alex Mueller, conducting research on topics like eggshell maculation, kin discrimination, and parental signaling.
