Keith Adam Nelson is the Haslam and Dewey Professor of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Department of Chemistry within the School of Science. His research focuses on time-resolved optical studies of condensed matter structural changes, lattice vibrations, and ultrafast spectroscopic techniques. He pioneers methods to control crystal lattice dynamics using femtosecond laser pulses and explores phenomena like phase transitions and viscoelastic fluid dynamics. His lab develops novel optical tools for extreme environments, including high-pressure and shock-loading conditions.
Research Interests: Nelson’s work integrates chemical physics, condensed matter physics, and materials science. Key areas include femtosecond pulse shaping for coherent control of lattice vibrations, THz polariton wave manipulation, and real-space imaging of structural dynamics. His group also advances applications in photonics and extreme environment spectroscopy.
Outreach: Nelson actively engages in education through MIT’s Chemistry Outreach Program and the Lambda Project, mentoring high school students in hands-on experiments. He co-authored a paper on science outreach strategies in Phys. Educ. (2005).
Lab & Collaborations: The Nelson Group collaborates across disciplines, leveraging MIT’s resources in the GR Harrison Spectroscopy Laboratory and the Center for Materials Science and Engineering. Their lab website highlights innovations in femtosecond laser machining and coherent control techniques.
