Kei May Lau

Professor Kei May Lau serves as a Research Professor in the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She is internationally recognized for her pioneering contributions to photonics technology and holds the distinction of being the first native Hongkonger elected as a regular member of the United States National Academy of Engineering for research conducted in Hong Kong.

Her research focuses on the evolution of illumination technologies from fire and lamps to modern energy-efficient LEDs, with specialized expertise in micro-LED and micro-Display systems. These innovations enable transformative applications including dynamic traffic management systems, virtual windows that project real-time outdoor environments into windowless rooms, and next-generation virtual reality displays.
