Hiruta specializes in 20th century political thought with particular focus on Hannah Arendt and Isaiah Berlin. His research explores value pluralism, freedom theory, and liberal nationalism through comparative frameworks that bridge Western and non-Western political traditions. His work challenges conventional narratives by examining how thinkers like Fukuzawa Yukichi offer alternative strands of liberal nationalism that complement mainstream theories. He investigates the relationship between political theory and real-world moral dilemmas, questioning whether value pluralism is the only mature philosophical response to moral conflicts in the modern world.
Hiruta's publication record reveals a consistent engagement with the intersection of political philosophy, ethics, and intellectual history. His recent work shows increasing attention to comparative political theory, particularly examining non-Western contributions to liberal thought. The recurring themes across his articles include freedom, value pluralism, and the relationship between political theory and historical context. His scholarship demonstrates a distinctive methodological approach that combines close textual analysis with broader theoretical implications, often challenging established interpretations of major political thinkers.
