Kees Braun is a Full Professor of Paediatric Neurology at Utrecht University and head of Paediatric Neurology/Neurosurgery at University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) since 2011. Appointed professor in May 2012, he coordinates epilepsy research within the UMCU Brain center and leads the research group focused on personalized epilepsy treatment.
His educational trajectory includes a Medical Degree from Utrecht University (1992), specialization in Neurology (2000) and Paediatric Neurology (2002), and a PhD on Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Hydrocephalus (2000). His clinical training was completed entirely at UMC Utrecht.
Professor Braun's research pioneers precision medicine approaches for epilepsy, with deep expertise in refractory paediatric epilepsy, epilepsy surgery outcomes, advanced neuroimaging applications, and childhood stroke disorders—particularly moyamoya disease. His work bridges clinical neurology with computational modeling to develop personalized diagnostic and therapeutic frameworks that address both seizure control and comorbidities.
His 2025 publications reveal a strong translational focus: from tuberous sclerosis complex diagnostics using novel MRI techniques to N-of-1 trial designs for monogenic epilepsies and vascular modeling in moyamoya disease. This output demonstrates consistent innovation at the intersection of pediatric neurology, imaging technology, and precision therapeutics.
