Kee Chung is the Louis M. Jacobs Professor of Financial Planning and Control in the Department of Finance at the School of Management, University at Buffalo. He holds academic leadership roles including past Department Chair (2001-16). His expertise spans market microstructure, corporate governance, and financial markets.
Chung earned a PhD in Management (Finance) from the University of Cincinnati, an MS in Industrial Engineering from KAIST, and a BS in Economics from Hanyang University.
His research focuses on liquidity dynamics, trading costs, and governance mechanisms. Key themes include tick size reforms, hedge fund activism's impact on mergers, and the role of institutional investors. He pioneered metrics measuring market underreaction to earnings announcements, linking to post-drift effects.
With over 9,200 Google Scholar citations and 1,800 SSCI citations, Chung has authored influential papers in top journals like Journal of Financial Economics and Review of Financial Studies. Notable awards include the 2015 FMA Best Paper Award and recognition as a Top 50 finance scholar by citation metrics.
Administratively, he has shaped policies on market quality through SEC research contributions. Internationally, he served as a Fulbright Scholar in Korea and has presented widely in Asia.
