Kearney Coupland, Ph.D., is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at St. Lawrence University. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph, and a B.A. in International Development from the University of Guelph. Her research focuses on climate mobility, displacement, and adaptation in conflict-affected regions such as the Caribbean and Arctic, with a particular emphasis on slow- and sudden-onset environmental crises.
Her work examines how communities respond to disasters like Hurricane Dorian and the social dimensions of forced migration, including Syrian families' experiences of displacement. She also explores the ethical challenges of conducting research with war-affected populations.
Publications highlight themes of decentralized disaster recovery, adaptive capacity in climate-vulnerable regions, and the psychological and spatial impacts of displacement. While no formal awards are listed, her contributions to understanding human-environment interactions in crisis contexts are notable.
Office hours are held Tuesdays/Thursdays 10:00-12:00 p.m. (drop-in) and Wednesdays 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. by appointment.
