Kay Rhie is Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory at the University of California, Los Angeles. She began musical studies in South Korea at age seven, later continuing at UCLA and Cornell University. Her research explores interdisciplinary connections between music, acoustics, literature, and visual arts.
Rhie's creative practice investigates belonging and acoustic phenomena, drawing from classical, film, and European avant-garde traditions. Her notable works include the chamber opera Quake (premiered 2023) and the upcoming orchestral piece H'on (commissioned by LA Philharmonic for 2025 premiere).
