Kay Owen is a Senior Lecturer in Childhood Studies at the University of Derby, affiliated with the College of Arts, Humanities and Education. Her research focuses on early childhood development, family dynamics, and educational interventions. She investigates topics such as pre-school development through dance and movement, the challenges faced by student mothers in higher education, and the role of categorization in child learning.
Her key research outputs include studies on outdoor arts-based learning and family relationships in early years. She co-edited Family Relationships in the Early Years (2023) and authored Play in the Early Years (2021), exploring play’s role in child development. Recent work includes a 2025 pilot study on dance in Family Hubs and a 2024 analysis of student mothers’ mental health.
Owen’s publications span journals like Journal of Human Growth and Development and Thinking Skills and Creativity. Her work emphasizes practical applications, such as toolkit development for measuring child categorization skills and interventions to connect children with nature.
