Katya Tsaioun, PhD, MS is an Assistant Scientist at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health, with primary departmental affiliation in Environmental Health and Engineering. She serves as Director of the Evidence-Based Toxicology Collaboration (EBTC) and is affiliated with the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT). Her work focuses on establishing evidence-based methodologies in translational research to inform regulatory decisions in environmental and public health.
- PhD in Human Nutrition Science from Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy (1999)
- Post-doctoral training in neurochemistry at Harvard Medical School
- MS from Leningrad Institute of Technology (1987)
Dr. Tsaioun's research is centered on evidence-based methodologies in toxicology, with expertise in translating scientific innovations into policies and technologies that improve public health. Her work spans systematic review methods, evidence-based toxicology, and the development of alternative testing approaches that reduce reliance on animal models. She has made significant contributions to the application of evidence-based methods in environmental health risk assessment and the development of frameworks for decision-making in regulatory contexts.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on advancing evidence-based approaches in toxicology and environmental health. Her work consistently addresses the development and implementation of systematic review methodologies, evidence-to-decision frameworks, and alternative testing strategies. Key trends include the evolution of the GRADE framework for environmental health applications, the implementation of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in regulatory toxicology, and the advancement of systematic review practices in environmental health research.
Dr. Tsaioun has extensive experience bridging academic research, industry applications, and regulatory science. Before joining Johns Hopkins, she spent nearly two decades in the pharmaceutical industry leading translational drug-discovery teams. She founded Apredica, a company that became a leader in commercializing de-risking technologies, which was later acquired by Cyprotex (now Evotec), where she served as CSO and Board member. She currently serves on advisory boards and review committees for numerous governmental, commercial, and non-profit organizations, contributing her expertise in evidence-based methodologies and translational research.
As Director of the Evidence-Based Toxicology Collaboration, Dr. Tsaioun leads international multi-stakeholder efforts to establish evidence-based practices in translational research. Her work connects with various initiatives including the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement of animal testing), exposome research, and the development of alternative chemical testing strategies. She is actively involved in advancing the science of systematic reviews in toxicology and environmental health, with particular emphasis on improving the quality and applicability of evidence for regulatory decision-making.
