Dr. Katy James serves as a Principal Postdoctoral Research Associate at Harper Adams University, primarily affiliated with the Centre for Evidence-Based Agriculture (CEBA) and contributing to the Agroecology for Sustainable Food Systems research centre. With over a decade of specialized experience, she develops evidence synthesis methodologies to inform critical environmental and agricultural policy decisions.
Her academic credentials include a BSc (Hons) and PhD, establishing her foundation in evidence-based agricultural science.
Dr. James' research spans evidence synthesis methodology, agroecology, and sustainable food systems, with concentrated expertise in translating scientific evidence into actionable agricultural policies. Her work addresses pressing global challenges including antimicrobial resistance in food chains, circular economy vulnerabilities, and climate-resilient farming practices through rigorous systematic reviews and mapping techniques.
Her seminal 2016 publication established foundational methodology for systematic environmental mapping, demonstrating consistent focus on interdisciplinary approaches that bridge agricultural science, environmental policy, and food safety regulation across diverse ecological contexts.
Current research initiatives include EFSA-funded food safety vulnerability assessments, Humane Slaughter Association projects on fish welfare, British Council-funded sustainability programs for Thai rubber farms, Horizon 2020 food waste management collaborations, and Defra/Environment Agency studies on agricultural emissions mitigation.
Professional engagement includes active participation in the EU COST Network for Evidence Synthesis in the Agri-food Sector (EU-NESA), British Ecological Society's Agricultural Ecology Special Interest Group, and the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence's Systematic Mapping Methods Group.
