Katrine Turgeon is a Professor of aquatic modeling and ecology at the University of Quebec in Outaouais, with affiliations at the Quebec Biodiversity Science Center (CSBQ) and the Interuniversity Research Group in Limnology (GRIL). Her research integrates socio-ecological complexity into aquatic ecosystem management and conservation through transdisciplinary approaches combining natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering.
Her primary research interests focus on ecology and trophic networks in regulated reservoirs and aquatic ecosystems, examining how dam construction and hydrological changes affect ecosystem functions, services, and biodiversity. She employs meta-analyses, time-series analyses, paleolimnology, bioenergetics, and fieldwork to investigate food web dynamics. Her secondary focus is on socio-ecological complexity in resource management, particularly examining how human behaviors of consumers, fishers, and managers affect fish stock stability and biodiversity.
Her recent publications demonstrate expertise in reservoir ecology, fish population dynamics, and socio-ecological systems, with articles in high-impact journals including PNAS, Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, and Ecosphere. Her work reveals complex density-dependent immigration patterns in fish populations and examines the impacts of river impoundments on aquatic biodiversity.
Dr. Turgeon actively supervises numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across multiple institutions including UQTR, University of Sherbrooke, Laval University, and University of Montreal. Her lab currently has doctoral candidates working on projects related to tidal range impacts, trophic network stability, and multi-trophic biodiversity quantification in aquatic ecosystems.
