Katrina Palmer

Professor Katrina Palmer holds a BS from Roanoke College, MA from Appalachian State University, and PhD from Emory University. She is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University, serving as Math Transfer Director and Math S-STEM Coordinator. Her research focuses on numerical linear algebra applications in astronomical/medical imaging and integrating sustainability into mathematics education. She teaches courses ranging from calculus to graduate-level linear algebra, emphasizing pedagogical innovations like transparency in learning (TILT) and hybrid course design. Over 15 students have conducted research under her supervision, exploring topics from game theory to community college math placement analyses.

Dr. Palmer’s work includes developing MATLAB tools for image restoration and co-creating calculus support programs. She has advised projects on computational Pi estimation, virtual manipulatives in education, and financial mathematics applications. Her teaching portfolio includes courses at both Appalachian State and Emory University, demonstrating expertise in both theoretical mathematics and educational methodology.
