Professor Katie Hampson is a Professor of Disease Ecology & Public Health at the University of Glasgow's College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, where she leads research on infectious disease ecology with a focus on rabies. She joined the University of Glasgow in 2009 after completing her PhD at Princeton University in 2007 and conducting rabies research in Tanzania.
Dr. Hampson's research focuses on understanding infection dynamics across spatial scales and the impacts of control efforts for infectious diseases, particularly rabies. She employs detailed field investigations, vaccination interventions, and mathematical modeling to study transmission dynamics, population structure effects, demography, geography, and their influence on spatiotemporal disease patterns. Her work particularly examines disease persistence in partially vaccinated populations and the challenges to eliminating infectious diseases globally.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on practical rabies control strategies, including optimizing vaccination campaigns, improving vaccine supply chains, integrating genomic and epidemiological approaches for outbreak investigation, and overcoming geographical barriers to vaccination. Her research spans multiple continents with field sites in Tanzania, Kenya, the Philippines, and collaborations in Brazil and Madagascar.
Among her notable achievements is editing a special issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society on disease persistence and elimination challenges. She has secured significant funding through Wellcome Trust Fellowships throughout her career, supporting her field research in Tanzania and contributions to global rabies elimination efforts.
Professor Hampson actively promotes One Health approaches to rabies control, integrating human and animal health perspectives. Her work on Integrated Bite Case Management demonstrates how human and animal health systems can be integrated to improve rabies surveillance and control, contributing significantly to the global goal of eliminating canine-mediated human rabies by 2030.
