Katie Graber is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Musicology at The Ohio State University, specializing in ethnomusicology with a focus on race, ethnicity, immigration, and colonization in opera, Mennonite music, and critical theory. She holds a PhD and MA in Ethnomusicology from the University of Wisconsin and a BA in Music, Religion, and TESOL from Goshen College. Her research explores intersections of music with race, gender, and social justice, particularly in religious and colonial contexts.
Dr. Graber has served as co-chair of the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Voice Special Interest Group and as Intercultural Editor for the Mennonite Church USA and Canada’s hymnal Voices Together, collaborating with global consultant groups to edit hymn texts across 40+ languages. Her work emphasizes affect theory, critical race theory, and embodied music experiences.
Her publications include studies on opera singers in 19th-century U.S. history, Mennonite hymnody’s queer voices, and the hymnological feedback loop’s gender and racial dynamics. She has presented at national and international conferences in ethnomusicology and Mennonite studies.
Collaborations include a musicological lecture concert at OSU’s Opera and Lyric Theatre and contributions to the American Religious Sounds Project.
