Katie Gough is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the Program in Theatre & Dance. She holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from the University of California-Berkeley (2005). Her research explores intersections of performance, cultural studies, critical race theory, and gender studies, with a focus on African American and Irish diasporic movements. She has authored influential books like Kinship and Performance in the Black and Green Atlantic (2013) and Theatre and the Threshold of Death (forthcoming 2024), and her work has been honored with awards including the Errol Hill Award and the Oscar G. Brockett Essay Prize.
Her academic journey includes teaching at UC Berkeley, the American Conservatory Theatre, and the University of Glasgow. Gough’s recent projects investigate themes of death, healing, and relational thinking through performance theory. She has secured multiple grants and fellowships, including a UK Arts & Humanities Research Fellowship (2011) and a Scottish Crucible Fellowship (2013). Her scholarly contributions span essays, keynote addresses, and creative writing, reflecting her commitment to bridging theory and practice.
Awards and grants include the 2020-21 Scholar Teacher Award for excellence in teaching and research, and funding from UVM’s Humanities Center and the Office of the Vice President for Research. Gough’s work often involves collaborations with institutions like the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and international symposiums on performance studies.
