Katie Cueva is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, affiliated with the Center for Alaska Native Health Research and the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER). She holds dual ScD degrees in Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Health Nutrition from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, an MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an MAT from University of Alaska Southeast, and a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University.
Her research focuses on social determinants of health in the circumpolar north, culturally appropriate health promotion strategies, and health equity through community-based participatory action research (CBPAR). At ISER and CBHRS, she has led projects influencing regional/state COVID-19 policies, evaluated wellness initiatives in Anchorage schools, and amplified youth voices in Alaska Native resilience research.
Dr. Cueva actively engages in professional leadership as a board member of the Alaska Public Health Association, Alaska’s representative on the American Public Health Association’s governing council, and executive council member of both the American Association for Cancer Education and the American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Caucus. Born and raised in Alaska, she has worked at ISER since 2012 after teaching at West Anchorage High School with Cook Inlet Tribal Council.
