Dr Katie Carpenter is an Associate Professor of Public History at the School of History, University of Leeds. She joined the faculty in 2022, following temporary lectureships at the University of Bristol and Lincoln. Her research spans the social, cultural, and political history of Britain in the long nineteenth century, with a focus on public history, material culture, and science in the home.
- PhD in History from Royal Holloway, University of London
- MA in Modern History and BA in History from Royal Holloway
Her work explores how women engaged with science and technology in domestic spaces, particularly through projects like Scientific Housewifery and Stigma and Shame? Challenging Menstrual Taboo Through Time. She has contributed to public-facing initiatives, including exhibitions on the Peterloo Massacre and biographical essays on Queen Caroline of Brunswick.
Recent publications analyze topics such as mechanical gadgets in Victorian kitchens and the intersection of gender, class, and domestic labor. She has received the AHRC Creative Economy Engagement Fellowship and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
