Katie Brubacher is an Assistant Professor in Elementary Education at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education. She holds a PhD, MA, BEd, and BA from institutions including the University of Toronto and University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on multilingual newcomers in elementary schools, particularly those without prior print literacy, emphasizing translanguaging practices and emotional well-being. She has over 20 years of teaching experience across K-12 settings in Canada and England.

Her research employs ethnographic methods to explore how multilingualism supports belonging in schools. She advocates for humanizing research approaches that involve participants. Current projects address translanguaging pedagogy, raciolinguistic ideologies in teacher education, and newcomer children’s emotional experiences.
Recent publications analyze curriculum development with Indigenous literacy scholars, racial dynamics during teacher practicums, and plurilingual identity positioning. She teaches courses on language arts curriculum design and educational theory at the University of Alberta.
Brubacher has experience in grant writing and program development, focusing on linguistically-responsive teaching strategies. She collaborates with educators to create inclusive policies for multilingual learners.
