Katia Obraczka is a Professor of Computer Engineering and Graduate Director at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), leading the Internetworking Research Group (i-NRG). Her expertise spans computer networks, distributed systems, and Internet information systems, with a focus on protocol design across network layers. She has held prior appointments at the University of Southern California (USC), including as a Research Scientist at the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) and a joint role in the Computer Science Department.
Education: PhD in Computer Science (USC, 1994), M.S. in Computer Science (USC, 1990), and M.S. in Computer Engineering (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1987).
Research emphasizes energy-efficient protocols, wireless networks, and SDN applications in Intelligent Transport Systems. She has led projects funded by NSF, DARPA, NASA, and industry partners like Cisco and Google. Notable collaborations include the Inria-UCSC associated team 'COMMUNITY' (2009–2014), advancing delay-tolerant and programmable network protocols.
Recipient of the IEEE Fellow distinction (2014). Recent activities include a 2018 Forum Numerica seminar on 'Towards the Internets of the Future' and Labex UCN@Sophia-supported visits to Inria's DIANA team.
