Kathryn J. Smith, PharmD, BCACP, is an Associate Professor of Instruction at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, where she coordinates the Synthesis component of the Applications of Pharmacy Practice course. Previously, she served at the University of Florida and University of Oklahoma Colleges of Pharmacy. Her expertise spans leadership development, pharmacy education, and interprofessional collaboration. Dr. Smith holds a PharmD from the University of Minnesota and a BS in Chemistry from Wheaton College, complemented by a PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency at Supervalu/Cub Pharmacy.
Her teaching focuses on problem-solving skills, clinical communication, and professional development. Dr. Smith pioneered leadership courses for pharmacy students and hosts national leadership book clubs. Her scholarly work emphasizes leadership education and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Notable recognition includes AACP’s Innovation in Teaching and Emerging Teaching Scholar awards.
Research interests include leadership assessment paradigms, professionalism in healthcare education, and situational judgment tests. She actively contributes to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), particularly the Leadership Development Special Interest Group (SIG). Her practice experience includes community pharmacy management and ambulatory care roles in anticoagulation and diabetes care.
