Kathleen Wage is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at George Mason University (GMU), affiliated with the Volgenau School of Engineering. She specializes in ocean acoustic signal processing, combining array processing, acoustics, and oceanography. Her research focuses on random matrix theory applications in sonar systems, sparse array design, and deep-water ambient noise analysis. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in the North Pacific and Philippine Sea, supported by grants from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Education: PhD and MS in Electrical Engineering from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (2000/1996/1994), and BS from University of Tennessee (1990). At GMU since 1999, she transitioned from visiting assistant professor to full professor (2022). She led the ECE Department’s PhD committee (2008–2016) and chaired professional workshops like the IEEE Underwater Acoustic Signal Processing Workshop (2013–2017).
Teaching: Developed the Signals and Systems Concept Inventory (SSCI), recognized internationally for assessing student understanding. Recipient of the Harriet B. Rigas Award (2016), John Toups Medal (2019), and Rossing Prize (2022). Advocates for active learning and gender equity in engineering education.
Awards: Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (2025), ONR Young Investigator Award (2005), and Mac E. Van Valkenburg Teaching Award (2008). Grants include projects on random matrix theory, adaptive beamforming, and deep-water acoustic scattering.
Research Group: Leads the Ocean Acoustic Signal Processing Group, funded by ONR, focusing on array processing innovations and environmental acoustic modeling. Collaborates on projects like the SPICE experiment and Philippine Sea acoustic tomography.
