Kathleen Thelen is the Ford Professor of Political Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a permanent external member of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, and a faculty associate at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. Her work focuses on the origins and evolution of political and economic institutions in high-income democracies, particularly examining labor relations, social solidarity, and the political economy of new technologies.
Thelen earned her PhD in Politics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987 with a thesis on German labor relations. She previously studied at the University of Kansas as an undergraduate.
Her research has earned numerous accolades, including the Aaron Wildavsky Enduring Contribution Prize (2019), Barrington Moore Book Prize (2015), and Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award (2005). She has been recognized by prestigious institutions such as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (elected 2015) and holds honorary degrees from four international universities.
