Kathleen Parthé is a distinguished academic and Mercer Brugler Distinguished Teaching Professor known for her work on Russian literature and political texts. Her research focuses on the intersection of cultural politics and intellectual history in 19th-century Russia, with notable contributions to Slavic Studies and translation studies.
Selected publications include Russia's Dangerous Texts: Politics Between the Lines (Yale UP, 2004), A Herzen Reader (Northwestern UP, 2012, with a critical essay by Robert Harris), and Russian Village Prose: The Radiant Past (Princeton UP, 1992). She has also co-edited The Search for a New Russian National Identity: Russian Perspectives (Library of Congress, 2003), supported by a Carnegie Foundation grant.
Parthé has received prestigious awards, including the AATSEEL Book Prize for her translation work and recognition from Choice magazine. Her editorial roles include founding editor of Tolstoy Studies Journal and guest editor for Russian Studies in History and Slavic and East European Journal.
Her scholarly activities span global collaborations, with presentations in over a dozen countries. She has been affiliated with institutions such as the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies (three fellowships), supported by grants from NEH, ACLS, SSRC, and the New York State Council for the Humanities.
