Kathleen Okruhlik was a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Western University and held leadership roles including Chair of the Philosophy Department, Dean of the Faculty of Arts (later Arts and Humanities), and founder of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Feminist Research. Her research focused on the history and philosophy of science, feminist critiques of science, and epistemic diversity. She co-edited books on Leibniz, Women and Reason, and contributed to the PSA 1992 volume. Her 1994 paper emphasized the need for diverse perspectives in scientific theory creation, advocating for affirmative action rooted in epistemic rigor.
She championed equity in academia, balancing rigorous scholarship with compassion. Her administrative tenure saw the establishment of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. Colleagues and students praise her mentorship, warmth, and dedication to fostering inclusive academic communities. She passed away in June 2024, leaving a legacy as a transformative leader and scholar.
