Kathleen O'Brien

Kathleen O'Brien is a Senior Lecturer in the Academic Unit of General Practice at the ANU School of Medicine and Psychology. She is a qualified general practitioner with a background in statistics and data analysis, integrating her expertise in quantitative methods with clinical practice. Her research focuses on primary health care, social determinants of health, children’s health, and preventive health, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous health disparities and early childhood development.

Qualifications include a BSc, GDipStats, MBBS, and specialist qualifications such as FRACGP and AFHEA. She holds roles as Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Primary Health and Clinical Discussant for the PBAC-ESC. Her work spans mixed-methods research, digital health equity, pandemic response strategies, and obesity management in primary care.

Recent projects include a study on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in Australia and evaluations of vaccination strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has published extensively on topics such as screen time in children, behavioral health outcomes, and healthcare access for disadvantaged populations.

Key awards include FRACGP and AFHEA fellowships. Her research has been supported by grants addressing pediatric health, pandemic preparedness, and healthcare system resilience. She collaborates with international teams on community-based primary care initiatives and policy-relevant research.
